So we’re all waiting for that long weekend break in August. Long weekends are always a time to skip the routine and head out to explore places. There are the commercial destinations and then there are some which only those in the know will visit.

If you’re planning with friends, family, loved ones on destinations to explore but at the same time yearning for a not-so commercial place, then you’ve reached the right page. Read on to find out which Active  Escape interests you.


A romantic and pretty hamlet, Kanatal is perched high up at 8500ft and is the definition of untampered beauty and serenity. Armed with excellent weather and inimitable hospitality, Kanatal offers spectacular views of snow-covered peaks and impenetrable forests. This town is famous for its terrace stays – a concept that has captured the imagination of tourists in a very big way

By Rail – Nearest Rail head is Dehradun which is around 70 Kms away. From here Kanatal is easily accessible by road

By Road – If you prefer a road trip, you can drive down from Delhi to Kanatal which is about 308 kms away.

Naddi, a village in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh is among off-beat locations that should be on your bucket list. Situated at a height of 7152 ft, it offers magnificent views of the Dhauladhar range to its North and the lush green Kangra Valley to the South.  It is a more peaceful option as compared to McLeodganj and is just a short trek away (3 kms) from the more popular town.  While in Naddi, don’t forget to visit the quaint Dal Lake which offers much needed calmness to the senses.

Things to do:

  • Trek from McLeodganj to Naddi
  • Take a trek to Triund & view the amazing Sunset
  • Take an early morning jog by the Dal lake
  • Sit by the porch of your homestay and breathe in the beauty of mighty Himalayas

Udechee Huts in Naddi is a good option or you can also find many hotels around the main road of the village or you can opt for a homestay if you’re looking for a more economical stay.

How to reach:

By Rail – Nearest Rail head is Pathankot. From here  you will easily find road transport for Mcleodganj which is approximately 95 kms away. Naddi is just 3.5 kms from Mcleodganj which can be either reached by Auto or you can trek the distance

Vihigaon is a village in Shahapur Taluka in Thane District of Maharashtra. It is about 118 kms from Mumbai.  It is a green haven for anyone looking for some time away from city life. It is most famous for the Vihigaon Waterfalls where you can enjoy a day trip or better still enjoy Water Rapelling.  If you want more of the lush green lands, head to Igatpuri which is just 12 kms away.

Things to do:

  • Short trek to the Waterfall
  • Water Rapelling

Opt to stay at Igatpuri which has some brilliant options, from homestays to hotels.

How to reach:

By Road – You can drive down from Mumbai or you can take State run buses to Igatpuri which is well connected to Vihigaon

By Rail – You can also board a train to Igatpuri which is the nearest Railway Station.

Vasind is a lakeside village in Maharashtra at a distance of 70kms from Mumbai. It is a quaint village offering some much needed peace amidst nature. If you are looking for some much needed break and want to live close to nature, Camp out in Vasind.

By Rail – This is the most convenient mode of transport as you need to board a Mumbai Local which goes in the direction of Kasara. Vasind is a station between Kalyan and Kasara.

Chikmagalur, located in the foothills of Mullayanagari range is a favorite among people from Karanataka for its climate and coffee estates. It takes its name from the Kannada phrase ‘ Chikkamagala Ooru’ meaning younger daughter’s town. It is believed that the town was given as dowry to the youngest daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna.

Chikmagalur is among the most rampant coffee cultivators. Around the lush plantations, grew a coffee culture that is hard to extract away.

Things to do:

  • Cover the three main peaks of the town, namely, Sheethalagiri, Baba Budan Giri & Mullayanagri.
  • Experience the thrill of driving through kachcha road to Hebbe Falls
  • Explore the Coffee Culture by visiting the coffee plantations
  • Try the Kudremukh Trek
  • Raft down the Bhadra River
  • Enjoy the Monument Trail of Hoysala Temples

How to reach:

By Air – Nearest Airport is Mangalore which is 160 kms away

By Rail – Gudur Railway station is the closest rail head and is situated 40 kms away from Chikmagalur. From here the town is well connected by road

By Road – Chikmagalur is well connected to all major cities like Bengaluru, Mangalore, Hubli & Hassan.
